Hiya
First of all, I'm happy to report that today, very nearly four months after my arrival in these lovely parts, the housing association got a workman to repair two broken window-panes in the front and back doors to the "close", i.e. the entrance hall, to our flats. They were damaged sometime between March, when I first saw the building, and May 9, when I arrived to take possession of my flat. I had to sign a form accepting to pay my share of the repair costs, even though I had absolutely nothing to do with the damage. Way to go -- not!
Last Friday evening, I had hoped to find those panes repaired, which they weren't, but was surprised to find a beautiful new white-on-blue, square number plaque attached to the wall next to my own front door. That would have been fine with me had anyone consulted me about it, and had it been the right number, or letter, rather. Some things will never cease to amaze me, and the local housing association is one of them... :) Needless to say, I brought out my screwdriver and took the offending plaque down. Handed it to the workman doing the window panes today, who did a bit of head-scratching and head-shaking but promised to give it to someone who would attach it in the right place, i.e. across the landing from my front-door.
These kinds of things remind me of Gottfried Keller's short stories about the citizens of Seldwyla. I can feel a couple of stories coming on... -- watch this space!
