A chance encounter has put me in touch with the Oban Walkers, a lovely group of people who meet a couple of times a month to explore the fabulous walks in the Oban area.
Yesterday, I joined them for the first time to walk in the Allt Broighleachan (or Breighlachan -- as you can see below, the signs don't agree on the spelling) Caledonian Forest Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Here are a few visual mementos.

The midgies were quite bad so we were glad to come to a large area with bog myrtle, aka Sweet Gale (Myrica gale). We grabbed handsful of the leaves to rub between our fingers, then tried and transferred as much of the ethereal oils onto our bare skin. It worked insofar as the midgies didn't bite quite so much but would still brush irritatingly against the skin.
We had a short lunch break on a fairly steep bit of the path -- some were evidently more comfy than others... ;)
Jeannette, John and Kiera, one of the best behaved border collies I've ever come across. Even so, dogs seem to walk their people rather than the other way round...
I found the vegetation close to the ground simply stunning. Look at these colours of mosses and small cushion plants:
