On this 1st anniversary of my arrival in Oban not just to spend a holiday or to be passing through but to put down new roots and spend the next substantial part of my life here, it gives me great pleasure to share the following with you all out there:
You may or may not know that I've been a member of the Oban Bach Choir for some time now. We have been busy rehearsing Mendelssohn's ELIJAH. The day of the grand performance*) is fast approaching:
Saturday, May 16th, 2009
Felix Mendelssohn's
ELIJAH
ELIJAH
The soloists will be

Christopher Josey, Tenor
Martin Shaw, Bass
The conductor is the excellent organist and musical man from North ConnelJulie Martin-Carter, Mezzo-soprano
Christopher Josey, Tenor
Martin Shaw, Bass
Norman Nicholson
Saturday, May 16th 2009, 7:30pm at St. John's Cathedral, Oban
Seat with programme (at the door) £6.00, concessions £5.00
Please come along if you're in the Oban area, and do feel free to pass on the word.
*) At least I hope it will be grand as, quite frankly, the vast majority of us are strictly amateur vocalists and instrumentalists and things sometimes sound a bit wobbly ... but the beauty of living and singing and musicking in these parts is that everyone is very enthusiastic and generous and tolerant.

Lovely to hear from you, how wonderful to sing in a Bach choir – if I were free and single I would love to come over - our plans for visiting Scotland this year (I have a friend near Aberdeen) seem to be falling through, again – it is a long way away and hubby can only take two weeks holiday at a stretch (we wanted to drive).
This is my second invitation to a concert given by a Bach choir on 16th May – my friend in Nuremberg invited me to her concert too! Unfortunately we have our own event that weekend, the ‘Spielfest’ in our village which I am heavily involved in…

Ich wünsche gutes Gelingen beim Chorauftritt! Du hast ja einiges vor in der nächsten Zeit mit Konzert und dem Besuch deiner Eltern – habts gut.

How absolutely lovely! I wish Oban were a little nearer to Oxford, or vice versa. I used also to sing in choirs, though have not found one locally - nothing like it for making your heart sing!
I hope it all goes really well.
Kind regards
H.S.
All the very best for the performance - sure it will be very grand.

Hope it goes really well, M.
More to say soon, but snowed under as usual...
Much love to you

My dear M.
I wish I lived nearer to Oban! I would certainly come and listen to your performance. ... I was not aware you joined the Oban Bach Choir, how wonderful.
Congratulations to your one-year-anniversary in Oban – good for you! You seem to have arrived HOME – in Oban and in yourself.

All Love from Switzerland and a hig bug,

Dear M.,
... alas we wont make it but wish you and the rest of the choir a successful concert and a full concert hall.
...
We may still come up and pay you a visit this year, my brothers want us to visit them in London and we have been looking at the Royal Flying Scotsman train, which would get us to Edinburgh at least, and then catch a normal train to Glasgow and or Oban, still in the planning stages, as ... (the royal we) are retired now, plenty of time but not quite so much cash!
Best of luck on Saturday.

Sing your heart out, my dear! Sounds wonderful.
Love,

Dear M.,
I had no idea you also speak (sing?) in Gaelic! That's amazing, I love the sound of this language. Even though I can't understand a word of it I often tune my radio to the Gaelic BBC station.
I have a Scottish friend who speaks Gaelic and she says it was a challenge to learn it even though her mum was a native, fluent user herself.
I'd love to hear your Gaelic accent :)

Hope you are enjoying your time with your parents and that the weather is kind to them. It has gone slightly pearshape here in Inverness, but that's the charm of the Scottish aura, that is switches from beautiful to really bad in no time and without warning.
All the best,
M.K., Inverness
Hope you are keeping well. Good Luck for Tomorrow.
Love G.S., Stafford
