Hiya out there!
This is going to be a pretty personal entry, so if you're not interested, please go find another post :)
Last night my brothers and I met with my parents at their solicitor’s to sign a contract ensuring that neither of our parents will be turfed out of their home when the other one dies but will retain the fullest possible control over their funds until he or she can no longer handle their affairs themselves, or dies in their turn. It means that my brothers and I will inherit only when both our parents are dead (or if the surviving one decides to live with someone else or even get married).
Yes, this is a sober subject. But I think everyone’s greatly relieved this has been settled, and settled so amicably and in good time. Our parents are both still very well (with the odd twinge and ache and pain), but one just never knows.
We rounded the event off over a glass of good red wine at a nearby pub.
Before we parted, Father and Mum invited us and our loved ones to Father's 80th birthday (next Jan 22 -- birthday greetings will be forwarded with great pleasure, just leave a comment). They’ll have open house for neighbours and friends on the actual day -- should be a good party. Our actual family will celebrate a little later.
Knowing what so many of my friends are going through with their ageing parents, I feel deeply privileged and grateful to have such sensible, considerate and well parents. If only everyone could be in this situation!
Have a great day, wherever you may be and whatever the weather.
