The sea beyond Berne

Hiya back

Today is a very hazy day and, looking up from my computer screen, I can see nothing but the outlines of the downtown rooftops -- a couple of medieval spires, including the faintly verdigris top of Zytglogge and several construction cranes pointing westward. So it's easy to imagine a beach beyond the buildings, and waves lapping the shoreline, slowly rolling in all the way from Africa.

This is what the horizon looks like on a good day, for example last Friday evening. Click on the images to see bigger versions and a slightly nibbled-at cross in the face of the Jungfrau...

Today I also saw the first perfect white of hawthorn blossoms and perfect pink of wild plums. The magnolia buds outside our office building are ready to burst into bloom; elsewhere on my way to work, a magnolia tree is already out in its bridal glory. It was on the news today: this has been the warmest winter on record all over the world, weeks of frost on the US Eastern Seaboard notwithstanding. And while I have quite enjoyed being able to zip around town on my bicycle all winter -- except for maybe four days of rain -- I'm not sure this kind of winter is really what I like.

As I've not yet had the time to photograph those new blossoms, here are some earlier photos. These flowers are long since gone (photos taken three weeks ago, except for the bluebells that I saw last Saturday, for the first time this spring).

What do you say?
