Night Time in Berne, Switzerland (Dec. 13, 06) / Sunny Surprise

Hello back!

I hope you had a lovely Holiday break, wherever and whoever you may be.

The other evening I was moved to photograph the nearly full moon hovering in the evening sky above one of Berne's beautiful iron bridges, Kornhausbruecke.

In contrast, at about 2:20 PM today, the sun suddenly lit up our north-west facing office kitchen, just as I was sitting down to a late lunch. Fabulous!

It reminded me that only last Saturday afternoon, a ray of sunshine was suddenly reflected in a building opposite and lit up my north-facing kitchen and part of the hallway at home -- a total surprise! Either I have never been at home at that time of year and afternoon (Dec. 23, 3 PM), or the sky was covered. Whichever it is, it truly lit up my day.

Too many people never get to see the sun in winter; too many people have fallen victim to senseless wars or massive natural disasters. Just now news is coming in from flooding in Indonesia. The death toll among the civilian population in Iraq has risen to over a quarter million, that among the US troops to above the number of victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. And it's only a few years since a massive earthquake shook the earth at Qom in Iran, claiming thousands of lives and destroying the city's fabled ancient fortress. That cataclysm seems to be all but forgotten, eclipsed by the tsunami catastrophe of two years ago that killed the inconceivable number of some 230,000 people.

Looking back over this year and beyond I have much to be grateful for.
