Bern in winter (Nov./Dec. 06)

Hi there
I'm still catching up on stuff, so here are a few pix from mid-November, followed by a couple of very recent ones.
Everyone has heard that 2006 will be one of the warmest years ever! Bern has seen a smidgeon of snow, way back in September or October, if my memory serve. Above is a picture taken just under a month ago: I had never had flowering rose campion this late in the year. It's still going strong, actually, as I write, mid-December!
However, for about a week now the Alps have been under a solid coat of snow -- and about time, too.

A very foggy morning, mid-November.
The city below my office window was shrouded in mist. The sun rose almost due south -- this photo was taken at about 10 AM on Nov. 16.

One month later, things look -- if anything -- much brighter. This is Bern on December 13, 2006, at about 4PM: bare trees, perfectly cloudless sky, the sun painting the buildings across the Aare valley orange-pink:

Above: Beyond the spire of Berne cathedral, the snow-covered Alps glow in the late-afternoon light.

Mornings are icy, though, because there is no cloud-cover to keep out the cold. I actually quite enjoy seeing a bit of frost on the tiles of the house opposite.

Smoke rising from chimneys, bare branches through which the Fribourg Alps and (bottom) the Jungfrau are just visible (if you know what it is you're looking at...) ;) -- mid-December, ca. 8:30AM.

More to follow soon! Thank you, and come back!
